Bob had accidentally left the rental car lights on, so the car would not start after we packed up to leave today. I asked a taxi driver waiting outside our hotel to help -- his English was limited, as is my Spanish -- but he understood finally what I needed after I put my hands out and made a "zittttt!" sound, to demonstrate the use of jumper cables. He got his out, but they did not work. So we had to call the car rental place in Rota, and they called a garage, and a mechanic came out and zapped the batteries and the car started right up.
We headed north from Malaga,into the mountains. We drove through beautiful green areas, with lots of "Yield to cows" signs along the roads.
In Ronda, we found the Hotel El Cortijo (www.hermanosmacias.com or phone 952 87 07 46), just outside the city on the road to Campillos. It was only 60 Euros/ about $75, and had a lot of atmosphere. The grounds included a campgrounds, a pool, a track with little pedal carts for kids and two tennis courts. It was decorated with old Spanish antiques and lots of bullfight photos. Ronda has the oldest bullring in the country, so the hotel's charming decor reflected that.
We had our dinner right at the hotel. I had gazpacho (a cold vegetable soup) and stuffped green peppers; Bob had lamb.
Tomorrow we plan to go see the sights in Ronda, where many small Spanish houses and businesses cling to the side of a steep cliff overlooking a green valley.
